Anxiety and Depression
These can result from life stressors, biopsychosocial factors, trauma, situational factors, life transitions etc.
The quality life is impacted by these feelings. Symptoms of depression include but are not limited to sadness, crying, loss of motivation, loss of enjoyment or interest in usual activities, sleep disruption such as waking up early in the morning, guilt, isolation, changes in appetite and or weight, suicidal thoughts.
Anxiety can include constant worry, feelings of panic, unable to stop thinking, racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, irritability, avoidance of situations that may create stress, ritualized behaviors designed to help decrease feelings of anxiety.
Therapy can assist in teaching different ways of approaching the situations that create these feelings. Learning to mange thoughts. Learning to manage symptoms. Help instill hope and a sense of control.
Couples and Relationship Counseling
Premarital counseling can assist in establishing the foundation for a successful relationship. Discussing the difficult issues such as expectations of one another, finances, religion, sex, the challenges of a long-distance relationship, how to fight fairly can aid in avoiding problems.
Discussing problems and issues with a relationship counselor can help repair problems that arise in relationships: these include but are not limited to: feeling emotionally distant from your partner, loss of interest in sex, parenting, infidelity, financial mistrust, feeling as if you cannot communicate with one another.
Therapy can help in learning listening and communication skills, conflict resolution, finding a secure base within your relationship.
Family Therapy
Problems rarely arise in a vacuum. Family therapy can help decrease the time in therapy by addressing issues, problems, behaviors that have arisen within the family with the people involved present in the sessions. Within this process family members often can hear each other’s viewpoints, learn from one another’s struggles and successes. Apply what is learned in therapy within the family.
Stress Management and Life Transitions
We all have stressors in our life. We do not always have control of life stressors. What therapy can help with is to learn new ways of dealing with stressors and or major life transitions. This may include learning how to set boundaries, assertiveness techniques, being gentle with and understanding of ourselves.
Examples of Life Transitions and Stressors are:
- Marriage
- A new job
- Moving
- Children going to college
- Break up or relationship conflict
- Work life balance
- School
- Major health changes
- Death of a loved one
Burnout and Work Stress:
We do not always recognize when we are experiencing burnout, work stress is more recognizable.
If you feel less motivated, more irritable, not your creative self, less productive, exhausted you may be experiencing burnout. Burnout is not just a work setting related feeling. You can experience this in your day to day life.
Learning to refocus, set boundaries, find balance between work, responsibilities at home and self care is the goal. Sometimes this may include re evaluating career choice, choices between staying at home and working outside the home.
Video and or On-Line Therapy
This is an option for when it is more convenient to have sessions via the internet. This can be discussed after the intake session.
